Coffee Klatch Monday ~ A Gripe

Well, my husband and I have been trying to keep high fructose corn syrup out of our diets as best we can, and when we find a product that has taken it out, we buy it.

We've always bought Miracle Whip, but when we realized they had taken high fructose corn syrup out of it we were very happy. They didn't brag about it on the label, like Hunts did on their catchup... but that was okay.

And then, then, just this weekend, my husband had the Miracle Whip out and read the ingredients and learned that they'd put it back in. Or was this an old jar that they've peddled off? We didn't know. The label was the same 'New Look'.

This sort of crap just bothers me. These companies who try to pull a fast one on you like this, if this was a deliberate way to get sales ("Hey, I know, let's discretely take the high fructose corny syrup out of the mayo, and don't announce it and see if anyone notices. And then when they're buying it again, we put it back in.") I find it low handed.

Okay, your turn. What ticks you off?

  1. If they randomly take ingredients out to put them back in, that's a good way to blindside someone who doesn't always look at the labels all the time who is trying to change their diet. What if someone was allergic to one of their ingredients that they 'took out'?

I don't know what it is, Miracle Whip always has a weird taste for me so I don't get it but I can see how when you're trying to eat healthier and they do something like that. :-/

  2. I wish fast food places would put pictures up of the food while it's in the processing stage. Lol

Sorry to hear about the Miracle Whip. I enjoyed it on my sandwiches, too.

  3. The other day I actually told off a stranger on the phone. She answered the phone for the manufacturer of our fridge. She was trying to send me in circles, again, telling me to call someone else. I say, I've already talked to them (again) and they want me to contact you (again). So when I asked to talk to a manager because I'd had a week of this wild goose chase she tells me I don't know what I'm talking about. Well then be helpful and do something about it! sheesh.

    Okay I'll calm down now....
    :)
Oh, and I'm drinking chocolate milk and eating frosted flakes with strawberries.

  4. My pet peeve is the inclusion of artificial sweeteners. I do still eat and drink things that have it in there, but try to avoid it if possible. I'm not even really a fan of things such as stevia after having read some of the conclusions based on research done on these types of sweeteners. But like I said unless it's natural sugar it's hard to avoid, especially when you're addicted to pop like I am!

  5. Yeah, Nellie, to us too, but when they had the sugar in it and no fructose, it tasted like it had always when we were kids. But I'll be on the look out from now on and see if they didn't sneak it back in. I use the olive oil one, and it's w/o fructose.

Miranda... do you really? Well, I can see your point, then fewer people would eat it, right?

Emily--no one should have to go through what you did. I can't blame you one bit for being angry about that.

Halloweenman666, I have not drank pop in years, and then I found out that the only soft drink that has SUGAR in it is Siera Mist.

The reason we avoid high fructose corn syrup is because your body does not use it like it can sugar... it is NOT a natural sweetener, it is highly processed--in fact it is made in a lab. Thus the calories that are taken in do not go to energy--it goes straight to fat. I do believe some day someone will prove it is causing diabeties, and it already is causing obesity in this country.

And that's my gripe for today. Thank you all for stopping by and sounding off.

  6. Oh, that totally ticks me off too. When I was pregnant, I had gestational diabetes. I had to really learn to read labels. So many things I couldn't eat and me with pregnancy cravings! I remember when Kellogs said they were lowering the sugars in their cereals. They truly didn't lower them much at all. I can't live without my Fruit Loops.

  7. I'm cheesed off that processed foods are so much cheaper than real foods. Not even organic foods. It's hard to be poor and need to be on a budget and still want to eat healthy.

  8. I'm not sure why the least processed foods should cost more. You would think that if they don't have to do much to them, that it shouldn't cost them so much.

The only way to battle some of this is to grow your own produce when you can, if you can. Go to farmer's markets too, I guess. We have not had a garden in years, but when we did we canned our own tomatoes--food tasted so much better, and we knew what went into them and what didn't.

  9. They want us to eat healthier but the healthy food is so much more expensive. It is such a pain.

  10. Unfortunately, it's a big pain in the butt to grow things in the desert. >.< Else, I would have some tomato plants, at least. I love the smell of the plant itself, and eat the fruit like an apple time to time.

I think processed foods are so cheap so that mind control substances can be easily introduced into the population. Run with that conspiracy theory, and it gets scary.

  11. Hmmm... sounds like a Koontz novel possibility for sure.

I've tried to grow tomatoes in large pots, but they have to be pampered and watered, and sprayed so that the pests don't go after them. I've gone back to growing flowers in my pots.
